"ThunderCat’s recent cover of For Love I Come inspired me to have a listen again to the amazing music of George Duke. When most of the records on this mix were made it was an extraordinarily creative time in LA. A family of musicians were bringing new rhythms, new instruments, new humor, new international influences to jazz. CannonBall was an important figure and his partner David Axelrod – but the new arrivals Airto Moreira and Flora Plurim were also instrumental and then George Duke from the Bay Area who had collaborated with Frank Zappa.

George Duke 1971-1980 (Mix)

George Duke has been an inspiration to hiphop for many many years…… Back in 1991 an album came out called Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest. You may know the name for another reason but anyways on a song called The Infamous Date Rape Tribe sampled Steam Drill by Cannonball Adderley featuring George Duke and we were off to the races. Ice Cube sampled Duke for True to the Game from Death Certificate that same year. Since then many more beat heads have been attracted to Mr. Dukes amazing keyboard playing, sense of rhythm and unique lyrical stylings. Dilla has definitely listened as has Madlib, Pete Rock, Kanye, Karriem Riggins and now well ThunderCat.
ThunderCat for all his youth has actually played with George Duke.

Anyways this mix is in tribute to George Duke as it is in celebration of ThunderCat. I think we are in a similarly creative moment now in LA as existed in the mid seventies and it seems fitting to make the link. Good musicians will make you listen again and ThunderCats For Love I Come surely made me do that. Enjoy.

Var volym två tagit vägen är något för en annan värld men här kommer i alla fall del tre i "Rickys & Musik" serien. Den är egentligen från några år tillbaka då jag gjorde ett försök till att få Malawi att lyssna på något annat än den djupaste roots världen skådat. På något sätt måste jag ha lyckats då han är mindre uteslutande i sitt musikval i dagens läge... kanske, tror jag i alla fall, äh fuckit, anyways... Del två kommer så fort jag hittat min rymdhjälm. Biggie Smalls: When BIG met Pac

"When we get to LA they put us up at the Sheridan in Studio City. Puff rents uss 5.0', which was the hot car convertible at the time - I remember we had a green one and a black one - and you couldn't tell us we wasn't doing it. Two cats from New York, in LA for the first time... So we had to have Fat Burger, we had to have Roscoe's Chicken and Waffles and Big had to have chronic and he wanted to meet Tupac. I had a guy that I knew from LA that suppliedus with some chronic, and it so happened he had a line on Pac. So he made a phone call and when we pulled up to the hotel, sittin' in his convertible is Tupac. And as we're standing there, as Big and Tupac is talkin', Greg Nice of Nice N Smooth comes downstairs. So Big is talkin' and Tupac is like "Yo what else you gotta do today?" And Big looks at me, and I knew at that point, cancel anything else we had sheduled. It was gonna be a wrap. Pac's like, "Let's go to my house." So Tupac and Big, Greg Nice, myself and Groovey Lew [Big's stylist], we all go to Tupac's house. Pac had this bag, I mean, a clear, big freezer bag of the greenest vegetables I'd ever seen. Big was so happy!

We went back to Pac's house and they just rolled up: Big was rolling, Pac was rolling, Greg was rolling, Groovey Lew was rolling, it was just going back and forth. Next thing you know, they started a cypher. We sitting at the house, Big is flowing, Pac is flowing, Greg is flowing, and me and Lew is just sitting there like, Yo, the moment of hip-hop for us has reached its high.

After the freestyle session, Pac went into his room and pulled out this green army bag, and dumped it onto the floor. And it was, like, 25 guns. Handguns, machine guns... So now, here we are, in the this backyard running around with guns, just playing. Luckily they were all unloaded. While we were running around, Pac walks into the kitchen and starts cooking for us. He's in the kitchen cooking some steaks- We were drinking and smoking and all of a sudden Pac was like, "Yo, come get it." And we go into the kitchen and he had steaks, and French fries, and bred, and Kool-Aid and we just sittin' there eating and drinking and laughing. And you know, that's truly where Big and Pac's friendship started." - Dan Smalls (former intern at Uptown Records)

Shiloh Ites: Icho Candy

Yes yes, måste göra er medvetna om Iyah One's kommande släpp på egna Shiloh Ites labeln där han arbetat med smått obskyra Jamaica sångaren Icho Candy som hade sin "storhetstid" under 80-talet och fick något av en revival på 90-talet iom hans Jah Shaka proddade LP "Glory To The King". Iyah är en man som arbetar länge och väl med sina rytmer för att få till den rätta stämningen och vajben, och det märks (!) när man lyssnar på hans alster. Testa numera klassiska "Throw Down Your Arms" (och glöm inte dubcutsen!) med Willi Wililams på vox så fattar ni vad jag menar.





Näst ut på Shiloh Ites labeln är alltså Icho Candy med "Babylon Wanted" och för ovanlighetensskull så har Icho voicat något som inte är en uptempo låt. Låten i sig själv växer vid varje lyssning. På 12:ans B-sida hittar vi kvalitetsstämpeln själv Jah Melodie, med en av mina absoluta favoriter från honom, "Up With The King". Det blir glad av denna släpps så fler kan höra och lyssna på den även i sin privata sfär och inte bara på de fåtalet sounds som haft denna snurrande som dubplate. Och i vetskap av att det finns en del dubcuts på denna så är jag nyfiken på vilka som kommer finnas på vinyl. Den ena är bättre än den andra så besviken kommer ingen bli, än mindre jag. Någongång i augusti/november finns den på marknaden. Se till att skaffa dig ett ex genom Iyah själv eller din lokala skivhandlare så du inte ångrar dig vid senare tillfälle då den är long gone. "Produced and inspired by the divine power of Haile Selassie I" som det brukade stå på de gamla Rockers vinylerna. Jah lever.

RnB: Rickys & Musik Vol. Ett

Jag har länge tänkt att jag ska göra lite nya mixar då det var ca 8 år sen och nu när jag har hela setet hemma efter att haft ena 1210:an utlånad under en längre period så nu är det bara ok go. Först ut är en samling jazz standards och spirituella anthems för tidiga morgonar eller sena sommarnätter. I och med att min skivsamling har börjat spreta åt alla möjliga håll efter framförallt de senaste åren så blir det en rätt blandad selection ni har att vänta. Det enda direkta temat är just rickys och musik som titeln säger så, yeah, vibes upon vibes, helt enkelt.
